Dave Foster has recently left Big Big Train. He announced his departure due to scheduling conflicts with his commitments to the Steve Rothery Band and other musical projects. Foster will make his final appearance with Big Big Train at the Night Of The Prog Festival in Germany in July 2024.
That being said, The Dave Foster Band's fifth album, Maybe They'll Come Back For Us, has just come out, and it's crossover prog at its finest. The album features Dutch vocalist Dinet Poortman and includes contributions from notable musicians such as Steve Rothery from Marillion, Mark King from Level 42, and Carly Bryant, formerly of Big Big Train.
There's not a bad track on this album—well, unless you don't care for lots of melody and hooks. The album is as close to pop as a crossover prog album usually gets, but that fits in just fine here at Prog Radio.
The album kicks off with "Sleep Spindles," a track that perfectly showcases Poortman's powerful vocals and Foster's melodic guitar work. Other highlights include "Talent To Failure," featuring Mark King's distinctive bass lines, and "These Tendencies," with a beautiful solo by Steve Rothery. Carly Bryant's vocals add a fresh dynamic to "Queen of Maybe," making it one of the standout tracks.

The album is as close to pop as a crossover prog album usually gets, but that fits in just fine here at Prog Radio. We're happy to be playing many of the tracks from this excellent album in our new music rotation. And, of course, you can plan on hearing it featured in Monday's "What's New Proggy Cats?" show.
I was originally going to give this album a 4.5 rating, since it's not "capital P" prog, but for what it sets out to do, it does absolutely perfectly, so screw it...
